The residents of Battisford and nearby villages were furious that BT was receiving considerable funding from Suffolk County Council for rural broadband provision, but progress was painfully slow and no planned improvements were on the horizon.
So Multithread stepped in.
Our six-strong team has in-depth knowledge of wireless networking technology. Indeed, we do a lot of consultancy work with ISPs and provide leading training courses that equip people to undertake wireless networking ventures.
So in response to the significant demand, we used our specialist expertise in fixed wireless broadband to create a wireless ISP (WISP) to give super-fast broadband speeds to the businesses and residents of Battisford and the surrounding area.
Where the main providers only managed 0.5Mbps, we now gives businesses and residents up to 24Mbps.
Our WISP currently covers around 1000 homes and 50 rural businesses over an area of around 64 sq km. The project has taken more than 1000 hours to complete and uses over 100 routers within the network. The impressive result was only achievable because of the technical experience and product knowledge of our Multithread team.
Local businesses are overjoyed:
“Simply brilliant. It’s moved us out of the doldrums of IT and, with 24 Mbps download speeds, it’s more than you get in the many of the suburbs of London! It’s saved us at least 1 day a week just in administration time due to the higher speed”.
Mr. Robert Tomlinson, Tomlinson Groundcare, Buxhall
The uptake and genuine gratitude from the community is palpable.
The previously closed pub which has been able to reopen as a CIC and is now capitalising on the improved broadband capacity:
“I’m more than happy to recommend the service to others. We used to have 0.5 Mbps and now we’re getting customers coming into the pub to use the new high speed WiFi”
Helen Read, The Punch Bowl Community Inn CIC
Local residents can work from home and benefit privately from the initiative:
“It’s definitely saved us money. We’ve cancelled BT and Sky and do our phone calls and watch TV over the Internet using Vonage, YouView and iPlayer. Plus the family can now use their iPads and Xbox when they visit!”
Mrs. A. Bamber, Combs Green
A relieved local farmer sums it up well:
“BT asked me why I was turning off their service, I said it simply didn’t work. Even Windows couldn’t manage to do updates! Time at my desk is precious and this has given me piece of mind, backups work quickly and it just works!”
